Chapter Five

March 12, 1993

In a rare act of sneaky defiance, Mary had stolen a copy of the gate key to the field they had parked in a month earlier. They had seen a movie, Fire in the Sky, about the Travis Walton alien abduction story. After a dinner at the Ryan’s Steakhouse outside of the fort, they had retreated to the field. Jason put the truck in park and before he could say anything, she had slid into his lap and wrapped her arms around him as she pressed her lips to his.

After five minutes, his hands freely roaming above her waist, he pulled away. “So,” he said in a confident, playful voice, the awkwardness having fallen away weeks ago after their third and fourth dates, “I thought it was funny how Mr. Walton’s name is Travis.” He laughed.

Mary looked away, a pained look on her face.

He reached for her chin and pulled her face toward him, making eye contact. “What is going on with you? I can tell something is wrong.” His green eyes bore into her brown ones. “You can tell me anything.” He moved his hand away from her chest to hold her more tenderly. “I want to be here for you, if you’ll just let me in.”

“What makes you think anything is wrong?”

“I still think about the last time we were here—the night of the dance. All of a sudden you started, I don’t know, fighting me? Like I was trying to,” he couldn’t bring himself to say the word, “hurt you. And then the mood shifted so suddenly, and I just held you while you cried.”

“That was then? What makes you think something is wrong tonight?”

He cocked his head to one side in disbelief. “For one, I saw the same look on your face just minutes ago that I did that night. And while we’re at it, ever since we left the movie and turned off Highway 17, you haven’t stopped scanning the fields and the sky.”

Her eyes broke the lock which held them.

He chuckled. “Are you afraid of being abducted by aliens?”

Her eyes snapped back to his, and a shudder ran through her body.

His expression turned puzzled. “Wait, are you?”

She looked away in silent answer.

“You are.” His voice was quiet. “Should we not have gone to the movie?”

“You wouldn’t believe me,” she finally said. “I knew going to see that movie was a mistake. But I can’t explain it. I needed to see it.”

“Why?”

She took a deep breath. “I’ve seen,” she hesitated, “things. I’ve woken up in the middle of the night and seen them in my room.”

“Seriously?” he asked, his tone incredulous. He leaned back in his seat.

“I knew I shouldn’t have told you.” She started to move off his lap. “I knew you wouldn’t believe me.”

He wrapped his arms tighter around her, trying to pull her closer to him. “Look, it’s not that I don’t believe you. It’s just, I mean, this is crazy.” He shook his head immediately as if he knew he’d just made a mistake.
